The 12 Jerusalem Gatekeepers
《犹大的狮子》之耶路撒冷城
Jerusalem is situated on the plateau of the Judaean mountains between the Mediterranean Sea and the Dead Sea. It is one of the oldest cities in the world. It is considered a holy land unsurpassed by any other. No other city has gained such a significance in all of man’s civilisation.
Jerusalem has a spiritual bearing much more than in a geographical sense. It is the holiest of all land in the world, and the centre of God’s creation. It was also where Jesus preached, died on the cross, and was resurrected. The sights and smell bring us back to the time when Jesus came to this earth. We could picture him walking on this same land. Traversing in the holy city, I am often reminded of the psalm, “Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: May those who love you be secure. May there be peace within your walls and security within your citadels.” (Psalm 122: 6-7)
Thousands of years, the Jews face the holy city to worship and pray. It is the heart of Judaism. It is also the capital of Israel which was reborned in a day. The Jerusalem of today is formed by different people living in the same place. The multi-faceted city presents to the world a place that is modern yet traditional, sacred and holy, academic yet commercialised. It has its heritage from old and also attracts a unique international focus. It has incubated man’s civilisation culminating in a rich past and history with much more to be anticipated as God’s story unfolds.
The psalm connected us to God’s heartbeat, and it is for us to pray for this holy city of God, which pleases His heart. Those who bless the city will be blessed. Jerusalem in Hebrew means “City of Peace”. Yet it has not experienced lasting peace in history. Generation to generation as we call its name, we are bestowing our hope and prayer for Peace for the city.
Where is the destiny of Jerusalem? Revelations 21:2-3 say, “I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God.”
God’s word will come to pass. Jerusalem will be a new Jerusalem where God dwells with his people. When we meet our Lord and our King, it will be all good, it will be a place without death, pain, or grief, and it is where we will have Eternal Life.

This painting is a majestic depiction of the prowess exhibited by the Lion of Judah seated on the throne of glory guarding over the Holy Land. Jerusalem is the center of God’s truth; where Jesus preached the good news, crucified, died and rose again to proclaim victory over death and sin.
